تحكي الرواية قصة بيكولو؛ راعي دعاسيق صغير بإمكانه العزف على الناي بطريقة جميلة، تضيع منه بعض دعاسيقه في يوم من الأيام ويظل يبحث عنها حتى يحل الظلام ويلتقي كاميليا؛ راعية اليراعات الصغيرة، التي تساعده في العثور على دعاسيقه المفقودة.
يرغب بيكولو في أن يرد المعروف إلى كاميليا، فيعدها بأنه سيتولى أمور رعيتها حتى يتمكن كلاهما من مشاهدة الشمس معًا، ذلك أن كاميليا لم تكن قد رأت الشمس أبدًا، إلَّا أن ذلك لا يحدث، إذ يختطف جواسيس من أرض ليلليبوشا كاميليا في تلك الليلة، لأن الأمير الكسول بوتي أراد أن يلعب معها. يعلم بيكولو بالأمر ويقرر إنقاذها.
يُنظَم عرض كبير في أرض ليلليبوشا، يقدمه مهرج من المغرب يؤدي حركات بهلوانية ويعزف على الناي في أثناء ذلك، ولكن في الحقيقة ما المهرج المغربي سوى بيكولو، الذي ذهب متنكرًا، في محاولة للعثور على كاميليا، إلَّا أن أمره ينكشف.
في تلك الليلة، يبعث بيكولو اليراعات من أجل البحث عن كاميليا، وفي تلك الأثناء يزداد التوتر في ليلليبوشا، يتعاون الجميع، ويتمكن بيكولو من إنقاذ كاميليا والإيفاء بوعده لها
