الرواية التي أُخذَ عنوانها من عبارة شكسبير: "يداي من لونك، لكن، يُخجلني أن أحمل قلبًا أبيض جدًّا"، تُفتَتح بحادثةِ انتحارٍ يسردُها ماريّاس بطريقةٍ تكشفُ براعتَه في وصفِ التفاصيل والأحاسيس الغامضة. بدايةٌ صادمة، استعادية، لتاريخ عائلةٍ يُشكِّل فيه الأبُ محورَ علاقات مضطربة ومبهمة، تنعكسُ على تصورات الابن وأفكاره الغارقة في التشاؤم عن الزمن الآتي، وما يُخفيه الغدُ بوصفه، هنا، بوابة للجحيم.
مُنذ السطور الأولى يُدخلنا ماريّاس في جو ميلودرامي صادم، من خلال حادثة انتحارِ خالة بطل الرواية خوان، وزوجة أبيه في الوقت ذاتِه، في حمَّام المنزل أثناء مأدبة غداء عائلية مباشرةً بعد عودتها من شهر العسل. الحادثة التي وقعت قبل ميلاد خوان، تعودُ لتُلقي بظلالها على حياته، هو المتزوِّج حديثًا بلويسا الجميلة، والتي تشتغل في مجال الترجمة مثله.
بجملٍ طويلة، متشعِّبة، لا تخلو من الإيقاع الموسيقي الحاد، تتكشَّف عبر صفحاتِ الكتاب أسئلة إنسان العصر الموغلة في الشكِّ، واللاّيقين. بين عهد الطفولة والشباب المبكر، وبين نفسٍ بوليسي وآخر فلسفي تتوالى مشاهدُ وأحداث الرواية التي تبدأ بجملةٍ حاسمة على لسان البطل: "لم أشأ أن أعرف، لكنّي عرفت".
