الرواية تدور حول اعتقال المعارض سانتياجو رافائيل إثر أحد الانقلابات التي شهدتها الأورجواي خلال حقبة السبعينات من القرن الماضي تمتلئ بحب الحياة، سانتياجو الذي أمضى في السجن خمس سنوات لا يحاول في تأملاته خلال هذه الفترة توريط المتلقي في الخلافات السياسية وهو لا يشير إلى انتمائه الأيديولوجي، وتنتهي الرواية ولا نعرف الوقائع التفصيلية وراء سجنه ولا يدخل في أي حوار مع بقية السجناء، علاقاته معهم تنتمي إلى فضاء إنساني مغاير، ما يربطه بالعالم الواقع وراء الأسوار مجموعة من الرسائل يبعثها إلى ابنته وزوجته وأبيه الذين يعيشون في بلد آخر مجاور في أمريكا اللاتينية .
