يقول الأديب « الكبير علاء الديب» في سيرته الذاتية: هذه الأوراق أراها، محزنة، محيرة، وكئيبة. لكنها صادقة، صدق الدم النازف من جرح جديد، هي أوراق حقيقية، كان من الضروري أن تكتب؛ لأنها كانت البديل الوحيد للهروب مع أي شيطان أو للانتحار. ماذا حدث لنا في تلك السنوات1952 إلى 1982؟ ماذا حدث للناس وللبلد؟ من أين لإنسان يشعر ويفكر أن يحتمل في حياته كل هذه التقلبات والتغيرات؟ أليس من حق الإنسان أن يلتقط أنفاسه، ينعم بحياة مستقرة بعض الشيء، هادئة بعض الشيء، مفهومة بعض الشيء؟! يقول الناس: كل يوم له شيطان، وشيطان كل تلك الأيام كان يعمل بجد واجتهاد، لكي لا تكتمل الأعمال ولا تتحقق الأحلام، يعمل لكي يسود صراع دامٍ بين الناس، وأن تصل إلى نهاية يومك، منهكًا مهدودًا، وأنت في الحقيقة لم تحقق شيئًا. تغيرت معاني الكلمات ووجوه الناس، وخطوط الأفق في القرى والمدن، تغير الصوت والصدى، الظاهر والباطن حتى النخاع، والتغير سُنة الكون منذ كان، لكنني أعتقد أن التغير لم يكن يحدث من قبل بهذه القسوة، والسرعة، والفظاعة.
