ولد محمد أنيس يوم 21 أغسطس سنة 1921 وأكمل دراسته الابتدائية والمتوسطة والإعدادية ،ثم دخل قسم التاريخ بكلية الآداب جامعة عين شمس، وتخرج حاملاً ليسانس تاريخ بدرجة الشرف ثم أرسل إلى جامعة لندن وحصل على الدكتوراه سنة 1950
عمل أستاذا للتاريخ بالجامعة و انتدب للتدريس في جامعة بغداد عام 1974
وتوفي في سنة 1986 .

أحدث هذا الكتاب دويًا علميًا عندما صدر منذ أكثر من خمسة وخمسين عامًا؛ حيث اشتمل على مجموعة من أمه الوثائق في تاريخ مصر، وأزاح الستار عن جانب خفى من نضال الوفد، ومن شخصية سعد زغلول؛ وهو الجانب الذي لم يكن معروفًا حتى عثر الأستاذ الدكتور محمد أنيس على مجموعة المراسلات السرية بين زعيم الأمة سعد زغلول (باشا) وعبد الرحمن فهمى (بك) السكرتير العام للجنة الوفد المركزية، منذ تأليفها بعد نفى سعد وأصحابه فى مارس 1919، وحتى تاريخ القبض عليه؛ يوليو 1920. وقد مكن نشر هذه المراسلات الباحثين من تركيب صورة تاريخية لثورة 1919، كان من المستحيل التوصل إليها من دون الإستعانة بهذه الوثائق. وقد قدم المرحوم الدكتور محمد أنيس (1921 – 1986)؛ أستاذ التاريخ الحديث بجامعة القاهرة لهذه المراسلات بمقدمة تاريخية ضافية تكشف الكثيرمن الجوانب غير العلنية من نضال الوفد. والدكتور محمد أنيس هو مؤسس مركز وثائق وتاريخ مصر المعاصر ( 1967 – 1975)، والرئيس الأول له، وهو المركز الذى تم تحت إشرافه بجمع شتات العديد من الوثائق المهمة.
