كان كايبارا إكيكن فيلسوفاً وطبيباً وساموراي، عاش عمراً مديداً يمارس مهنة الطب، ويدوّن ملاحظاته وأفكاره بشأن الحياة السليمة والمتناغمة مع الطبيعة التي يمكن أن يعيشها الساموراي.
وعندما بلغ الرابعة والثمانين من العمر، قام بجمع ملاحظاته وما جنى من معارف في كتاب حمل عنوان يوجوكون، أي دروس في رعاية الحياة، وضّح فيه وصاياه الأخيرة لهؤلاء الفرسان المحاربين.
وعلى الرّغم من أنّ هذا العمل كان موجهّاً في الأصل إلى طبقة الساموراي في ذلك العصر، إلاّ أنه سرعان ما انتشر بين جميع فئات المجتمع، وأصبح مرجعاً في اليابان الحديث حيث تُعاد طباعته بشكلٍ دائم.
أمّا الهدف من ترجمته فهو وضع القارئ العربي على "طريق الساموراي"، وإتاحته فرصة السير عليه في مجالات عديدة من حياته اليومية، من أكل وشرب، وطاقة حيوية، وعناية بالجسم، ورغبة جنسية، ومرض وفن الطبابة، وإستعمال العقاقير، وصولاً إلى العيش الكريم في سن الشيخوخة.
والجدير بالذكر أن إكيكن ينظر إلى هذه الأمور من منظور شامل، مؤكّداً على ترابطها، ومركّزاً على مفهوم الوقاية، ممّا يجعله سابقاً لعصره.
