أبو الفرج ابن الجوزي: فقيهٌ حنبليٌّ محدِّثٌ ومؤرِّخٌ ومتكلِّمٌ يَنتهي نسَبُه إلى «أبي بكر الصدِّيق» رضِيَ الله عنه، وقد حظِيَ بشُهْرةٍ واسعةٍ ومَكانةٍ كبيرةٍ في الخطابةِ والوعْظِ والتصنيف، كما برزَ في كثيرٍ منَ العلومِ والفُنون.
هو «أبو الفرج عبد الرحمن بن علي بن محمد»، واشتُهِرَ باسمِ «ابن الجوزي» لوجودِ شجرةِ جوزٍ في دارِه بمدينةِ واسِطَ لم يكُنْ لها مَثِيل، وقيلَ إنه نِسبة إلى «فرضة الجوز» وهي مَرفأُ نهْرِ البصرة. وُلِد عامَ ٥١٠ﻫ/ ١١١٦م في بغداد لعائلةٍ غنية؛ فقد كانَ أهلُه تجَّارًا في النحاس، وساعَدَتْه ثروةُ والِدِه على التفرُّغِ لطلبِ العِلْم، وهو بالرغمِ من غِناه كانَ زاهِدًا وَرِعًا، وتتلمَذَ على يدِ كبارِ علماءِ عصْرِه، ومِنهم «القاضي أبو بكر الأَنْصاري»، و«أبو بكر المَزْرَفي».
تولَّى منصبَ الوِزارةِ في عهدِ «الخليفة الناصر» بتعيينٍ مِنَ «الوالي ابن يونس الحنبلي»، وبعدَ أنْ خلفَ «ابن القصاب» منصبَ «ابن يونس الحنبلي» قامَ بمُلاحَقةِ كلِّ مَن له صِلةٌ به، فكانَ مَصِيرُ ابن الجوزي النفْيَ إلى مدينةِ واسِطَ على الرغمِ من كِبَرِ سِنِّه آنَذاك، وعادَ بعدَ خمسِ سنواتٍ من مَنْفاه إلى مَجالِسِ وعْظِه في بغداد بحضورِ الخليفةِ ليضرِبَ للناسِ أروعَ مثالٍ في الصبرِ على المِحَنِ وتحمُّلِ الشَّدائد.
كانَ له دورٌ كبيرٌ ومُشارَكةٌ فعَّالةٌ في الخدماتِ الاجتماعية؛ وقد بنى مَدْرسةً ﺑ «درب دينار»، وأسَّسَ فيها مكتبةً كبيرةً ووقَفَ عليها كُتُبَه، وقد حظِيَ بتقديرِ العامَّةِ والخاصةِ وثَنائِهم، فقد كانَ خطيبًا مُفوَّهًا وأديبًا لا يُشَقُّ له غُبار.
وقد تميَّزَ ابنُ الجوزي بغزارةِ إنتاجِه وكثرةِ مُصنَّفاتِه التي بلغَتْ نحوَ ثلاثمائةِ مُصنَّفٍ شملَتِ الكثيرَ منَ العلومِ والفُنون، فهو أحدُ العلماءِ المُكثِرِينَ في التصنيفِ في التفسيرِ والحديثِ والتاريخِ واللُّغةِ والطبِّ والفقهِ والمَواعِظِ وغيرِها منَ العُلوم، ومن أبرزِ كُتبِه: «زادُ المسيرِ في عِلمِ التفسير»، و«صَيدُ الخاطِر»، و«المُنتظمُ في تواريخِ الأممِ منَ العربِ والعَجَم»، و«أخبارُ الحَمْقى والمُغفَّلِين».
تُوفِّيَ في منتصفِ رمضانَ عامَ ٥٩٧ﻫ بعد عامَيْنِ من عَودتِه منَ المَنْفى، وبعدَ أنْ أضافَ للتراثِ العربيِّ الكثيرَ منَ المُؤلَّفاتِ الفريدة.

قبل أن أدفع مسودة الكتاب للطبع بيومين، اقترح صديق فاضل أن أقدم بين يدي الكتاب بحثا في معنى المسجد والجامع والمنارة والمنبر، وأسباب تعدد المساجد التي نراها في المنارة الواحدة، فترددت في ذلك لانصرافي عن الأعمال في هذه الأيام الشديدة الحر، ثم رأيت أن في ذلك فوائد للمطالبين لا بأس أن أشغل نفسي بها يوما أو بعض يوم ، فأنشأت هذه المقدمة عجلا، وذهبت بها إلى أبعد مما اقترح كما سترى، ولولا ضيق الوقت لكانت أمت بحثا وأغزر مادة
