يبدو البحث عن السعادة هدف كل إنسان في الحياة. فمن يرفض هدفاً مماثلاً؟ رغم ذلك، لا يعرف كثر منا أين تقع المحطة القادرة على تزويدنا بالوقود الضروري لمتابعة هذا السعي. ولكن هل تستحق السعادة أن نتألم قليلاً في سبيل بلوغها؟ في هذه الحالة بالتحديد، الباحثون عن السعادة كثر. لكن فلسفتين تتصادمان: فثمة مَن يحاولون، من جهة، التوصل إلى طريقة تتيح لهم بلوغ الهدف الذي يضعونه أمام أعينهم، ومن يسلّمون، من جهة أخرى، نفسهم للأقدار إلى أن تأتي السعادة من تلقاء ذاتها لأنها تُعتبر، من هذا المنطلق، نتيجة منطقية. ولكن مَن يُعتبر الأصح: المصممون أم الحالمون؟ بعد الاستماع إلى الفئتين، يتضح لنا أن السعادة صعبة المنال، وأننا كلنا نجدّ في إثرها من دون جدوى. وربما يعود ذلك إلى أن السعادة تختلف باختلاف الأشخاص. رغم ذلك، تظل الحياة التي يحلم بها البشر تقليدية: الحب، والعائلة، والأولاد، ووفرة مالية إن أمكن. ومع أن الجانب المالي يُعتبر مهماً، إلا أنه لا يُعدّ ضرورة وأساساً لبلوغ السعادة.
