"في الرواية يكتشف أهالي بلدة إيطالية يبلغ تعداد سكانها 200 نسمة فقط، ويقطنون في 50 منزلًا، بالصدفة وجود عائلة من المهاجرين غير الشرعيين مختبئين داخل البرج النورماندي الأثري، ما يثير سجالًا غير مسبوق يوتر أجواء البلدة الهادئة.
وينشغل أهالي البلدة الصغيرة بقضية اللاجئين، ليغرقوا في ثنائية وهمية، صاحب الأرض والمهاجر، مبتعدين عن قضاياهم الأساسية المتعلقة باستغلال الطبقات الغنية لثرواتهم، وغطرسة ملاك الأراضي الذين حكموا عليهم بالفقر والتخلف.
وينقسم الأهالي بين رافض لوجود اللاجئين، وغاضب من حضورهم الغامض، وسط تخوفات من نواياهم، تَكشِفُ مدى جهل الأهالي وعدم معرفتهم بالآخر وتقبلهم للمختلف. ومع توالي الأحداث يتغير مصير البلدة جذريًا.
