تعد رواية "أبلوموف" (1859) لإيفان غونتشاروف من أهم الروايات الكلاسيكيّة الروسيّة في القرن التاسع عشر جنباً إلى جنب روايات دوستويفسكي وتورغنيف. وتكمن أهمية هذه الرواية أن مصطلحاً مهماً قد اشتق من اسم بطلها "أبلوموف" بعنوان "الأبلوموفية" الذي يطلق على نزعة الكسل والتراخي التي يعيشها بطل الرواية. وقد أعجب بها قائد الثورة الروسية لينين حين قرأها لأنها تدين الطبقة الارستقراطية. ولم يسبق لرواية من مشاهير الأدب الروائي مثل دوستويفسكي وتورغنيف وتولستوي أن أشتق مصطلحاً من رواياتهم على الرغم من شهرتها. كتب "بيساريف" معلقاً على رواية "غونتشاروف" "أبلوموف" يقول: "سيظل مصطلح الأبلوموفية حياً خالداً في الأدب الروسي، فاستخدام هذا المصطلح سيتجاوز حدود الأصقاع الروسية مترامية الأطراف ليصبح مصطلحاً عاماً شاملاً، واسع الاستخدام"، لقد استطاع "غونتشاروف" أن يكشف بجلاء ودقة المعنى الاجتماعي والجذور التاريخية العميقة لظاهرة الأبلوموفية ويوضح خطرها وتأثيرها السلبي على مجمل عملية التطور الاجتماعي في روسيا.على مدى خمسين سنة من نشاطه الأدبي نجح إيفان غونتشاروف في كتابةثلاث روايات هي أبلوموف و"قصة شائعة"-1847 و"الجرف"-1869. وترك أيضاً مجموعة من القصص القصيرة، وكتاباً يضم وصفاً ساحراً لرحلته إلى اليابان كعضو في حملة بحرية بعنوان "الفرقاطة بالاس: مذكرات رحلة -1858.
