لقّب نفسه بابن قطّين، ذلك لأنّ صاحبه الوحيد الذي بقي له في دنياه هو قطّ متشرّد أحبّه، عوّضه ببعض الأنس عن فقدان أب شيخ وأم عجوز، قطّ كان يحتكّ به قبل خروجه للذهاب إلى دكّانه القديم، دكّان لبيع الملابس المستعملة لا يسمن ولا يغني من جوع، كان القطّ ذاك وكلّ يوم، في كلّ صباح، ينتظره ويتبعه حتّى تبنّاه فجعله رفيقه الذي ينسيه الحاجة والفقر، سمّاه “بيراط”، بالعربية “قرصان”، ذلك لأنه فاقد لعينه اليمنى، إلى أن كان اليوم الذي مات فيه القط المسكين مختنقاً بعد أن نام عليه صاحبنا خطأً!!فتحسّر جعفر لموته حسرةً جعلت جنونه اللاّحق يسبق السّابق، فلقّب نفسه بابن قطّين تيمّناً بما سمع من ألقاب كابن سيرين، وابن عثيمين، وكذلك تخليداً لذكرى قطّه المغدور، رغم إدراكه أنه جعل نفسه ابناً لقط، لكنّه قال في نفسه مقنعاً لها في قرار مجنون دام أثره عليه كالمرض المزمن: “أن أكون ابناً لقطّ مجازاً أفضل من أن أكون ابناً لإنسان فعلاً!!فما ترك لي أبي سوى الديون تزيدني هلاكاً على هلاك…”.
