أنشأت سفيتلانا إليكسييفيتش نوعاً جديداً من الأدب قائماً على كتابة رواية من الأصوات المتعددة لشهود مرحلة ما، حازت على عشرات الجوائز الدولية؛ أهمها جائزة السلام من معرض فرانكفورت للكتاب 2013، وجائزة نوبل للآداب 2015، التي نالتها عن مجمل أعمالها المتعددة الأصوات التي تمثِّل معلماً للمعاناة والشجاعة في زماننا، وهي تعمق بأسلوبها الإستثنائي - الذي يقوم على تداخل دقيق بين أصوات البشر - فهم عصر كامل.
شهدت روسيا عدة ثورات وإضطرابات وحروب أهلية دامية في بدايات القرن العشرين، نجم عنها ظهور الإتحاد السوفيتي الذي شكل صورة عن الإمبراطورية العظيمة التي لا تُقهر.
رأى فيها البعض تحقق الحلم الإشتراكي الأحمر في بناء دولة عظمى، امتد نفوذها على نصف العالم تقريباً، بينما رأى فيها البعض أحد أقسى أشكال الحكم الشمولي القمعي.
في العام 1991 انهارت هذه الإمبراطورية بشكل متسارع بعد عدة ثورات وإضطرابات وحروب أهلية دامية، واستيقظ الإنسان الأحمر ليجد نفسه فجأة يعيش في أنقاض إمبراطورية تتهاوى إلى عشرات الدول المتصارعة، وتشهد إنهياراً إقتصادياً هائلاً ونهاية الأحلام الكبيرة التي عاشها.
في كتابها، لا تبحث سفيتلانا عن إجابات للأسئلة الكبيرة التي تهم قارئ التاريخ، بل عن آلاف التفاصيل الصغيرة للحياة اليومية المنصرمة عبر جمع عشرات الشهادات لبشر عاديين عاشوا هذه التجربة وتقلباتها.
