في عام 2003 اجري استطلاع للرأي في النرويج لأهم مئة كتاب ادبي في التاريخ التي تصلح لكل الازمنة وتساعد في تشكل الوعي الانساني وشارك في هذا الاستبيان كتاب عالميين، وأعلنت نتائجه في معهد نوبل وكان فرانتز كافكا هو الكاتب الوحيد الذي اختيرت جميع كتبه من بين المئة كتاب.اثر كافكا بالعديد من الكتاب العالميين منهم الكاتب الالماني المعاصر مارتن فالرز الذي كان موضوع اطروحته للدكتوراه "الشكل القصصي عند فرانتز كافكا" وكانت محاولاته القصصية في تلك المرحلة متأثرة بشكل كبير بأسلوب كافكا ويقول صراحة عن ذلك ان "مصيري الادبي قد تقرر بقراءته آثار كافكا وقد اعجب ساراماغو الحائز على جائزة نوبل بكافكا وقال انه كاتبه الخاص وانه من اعظم الكتاب في تاريخ الادب فيما يشير الكاتب الياباني وكتاباته المستقبلية.
