هذا الكتاب ليس كتابًا معارضًا للتحفيز، فبعض الأشخاص الذين أكنُّ لهم الإعجاب الشديد، هم كتاب ومفكرون محفِّزون - أشخاص مثل "إدوارد ديسي"، و"ويليام خان"، و"كارول دويك"، الذين طوروا نظريات عن حق تقرير المصير، والمشاركة الشخصية، وعقلية النمو، على التوالي.
وهذا الكتاب ليس معارضًا للاقتباسات أيضًا، فبعض الاقتباسات ثاقبة للغاية، وأنا أستمتع دائمًا بكلمات "كريستوفر كولومبوس" الشهيرة: ("لن تكون قادرًا أبدًا على عبور المحيط، إذا لم تتحلَّ بشجاعة أن تبعد نظرك عن الشاطئ")، ومقولة "ويليام وارد": ("الشعور بالامتنان وعدم التعبير عنه يشبه تغليف الهدية وعدم تقديمها")، وكلمات "دبليو. سي. فيلدز" الخالدة: ("إذا لم تنجح في المحاولة الأولى، فحاول، ثم حاول مرة أخرى، ثم استسلم، فلا فائدة من أن تبدو أحمق، وأنت تحاول تحقيق الأمر").
ببساطة، هذا كتاب معارض للترّهات التحفيزية، لقد قمت بكتابته لمجابهة عدم حكمة الاقتباسات والأقوال المطلقة، التي إما أنها غير صحيحة، وإما أنها مليئة بالثغرات.
ومن المهم أن تلاحظ أن النهج النقدي، وربما الساخر كذلك، الذي أتبعه في هذا الكتاب، ليس هجومًا على المتفوهين بتلك الكلمات التي نستعرضها بالمناقشة، فالأفراد الذين أكتب عنهم أكثر نجاحًا وذكاءً مني، ولكن طرحي هو فقط من أجل دحض العبارات التي أدلوا بها مرة واحدة - وهي العبارات التي تبناها الأشخاص المحفزون بطرق تعمم هذه العبارات، أو تفرط في تبسيط الأمور، أو تضلل الناس، ولو بشكل غير متعمد.
في الواقع، أنا أيضًا مذنب لقيامي بذلك في الماضي، فلقد قمت بتضمين بعض هذه الاقتباسات (وغيرها) في المقالات، والكتب، والخطب، وورش العمل التي قمت بها من قبل، كما نشرتُ أيضًا بعض المنشورات على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي، وعلقت الملصقات، وغيَّرت خلفية حاسوبي المحمول بتلك الاقتباسات. وفي بعض الأحيان اتبعت النصيحة بدأب، كما تجاهلتها كثيرًا، لقد فعلت كل ذلك وأكثر، متجاهلًا شكوكي طوال الوقت في أن شيئًا من هذه الاقتباسات لم يكن صحيحًا تمامًا؛ وذلك لأنه في الواقع، كان الكثير منها غير صحيح.
وهذا حقًّا ما يدور حوله الكتاب، إنه ليس دليلًا للمساعدة الذاتية يتسم بالنفاق، كما أنه ليس دراسة متعالية عن كيف يمكنك أن تعيش حياة أفضل، إنه مجرد محاولة لتصحيح الخطأ، بغضِّ النظر عن مدى الترحيب به من قِبل الجميع.
