صدرت رواية «ستونر» للمرة الأولى عام 1965، وتعدّ من ضمن أدب الروايات الأكاديمية أو التي تنقل أحداثاً في حرم الجامعة، بتفاصيل تتلمس جوانب القلق النفسي والاستسلام لمسارات الحياة. وعلى الرغم من أن الرواية لم تشتهر في حقبة الستينات، ولم تتجاوز مبيعاتها الألفي نسخة في بادئ الأمر، ولكن أعيد إحياؤها بعد ما يقارب خمسين عاماً. تبدو الرواية ظاهرياً رواية أكاديمية، كيوميات تاريخية حصرياً للأكاديميين. وذات قيم قديمة الطراز، قيم ما قبل الحرب، باعتبار أنها تتمسك بالضمير كأعظم الفضائل والثواب في الحياة. أما نثرها، فبالمقارنة بغنائية فيتزجيرالد، يبدو نثراً صارماً ودقيقاً؛ ليس فيه شيء من البهرجة لكنّه قادر على البقاء مثل خشب صلب مصقول. هو عمل ذو بناءٍ روائي لا يشوبه خلل، مثل منزلٍ عتيق لا يعرف الآخرون كيف يبنون مثله مرة أخرى. وعلى الرغم من سهولة النص، تظل رواية «ستونر» غير سهلة القراءة، ليس لأنها مبهمة وإنما لكونها مؤلمة. لقد نجح ويليامز في حرمان بطله بالقوة من السعادة في زواجه أو في علاقته مع ابنته و مع حبيبته، الطالبة الجامعية وحتى في وظيفته. وكانت هذه قسوة مفرطة. في أحد الحوارات النادرة التي قام بها جون ويليامز في حياته، قال: «أعتقد بأنه بطل حقيقي. الكثير من الناس الذين قرأوا ستونر، اعتقدوا بأنه حظي بحياة حزينة وسيئة فحسب. أنا أعتقد بأنه حظي بحياة جيدة جداً. إنها حياة أفضل من التي عاشها كثيرون. كانت لديه مشاعر تجاه ما كان يفعله، وكان الجزء الأهم في الرواية هو إحساس ستونر بعمله وشعوره بالمسؤولية. العمل الذي منحه هويته وشكَّل كيانه كما ظهر عليه».
