هذا هو جوهر لعبة السعادة وعقيدة بوليانا، الرواية التي نشرت عام 1913، ونجحت نجاحاً هائلاً جعل كاتبتها تتبعها بجزء ثاني عام 1915، بل لقد حرضت لعبة السعادة وبطلتها كتاباً آخرين على نشر سلسلة عرفت باسم "كتاب السعادة"، وصُنع ليوليانا تمثال أمام المكتبة العامة في لتلتن في نيوهامشاير.
منذ عام 1921، دخلت بوليانا عدداً من القواميس الشهيرة من مثل أكسفورد وكامبرج وكولنز لتصبح وصفاً يطلق على الشخص المفرد في تفاؤله وسعادته.
ظلت السعادة مطلباً ملحّاً للإنسان على مر العصور، وقد حاول دراستها وفهمهما فوضع لها النظريات، رابطاً إياها بالمتعة تارة وبفعل الخير تارة أخرى.
وأنشأ لها وزارات متخصصة - في بعض البلدان - وفي هذا كله أشكال مختلفة من "السعي نحو السعادة"، لكن بوليانا لم تحتج إلى كل ذلك، فقد تعلمت في عمر مبكر أن تجد سعادتها في أصغر الأشياء وأبسطها، وواظبت على العثور علىشيء يسعدها في أصعب المواقف وأشدها وقعاً.
لم تنكر بوليانا وجود ما يسبب الألم والضيق في الحياة، ولكن ما ضر لو واجهنا ذلك بشيء من المرح؟...
