لم أنس قط كيف كان العالم يبدو مفعم بالطمأنينة من مكاني المرتفع. كنت حين أتربع على كتفي جدي، وأتشبث به بيدي، وركبتي، أحرص على ألا تسقط قبعته البنية ذات الحافات العريضة، ويمر بنا كليمنت، ذلك الرجل النحيف، وهو يخرج منهوراً من محل حلاقة هندرسون.
لكني في ذلك الزمن، في تلك اللحظة عينها، في شوارع هوموود، لم أكن أعرف شيئا عن كليمنت، غير أني أراه يعرج على نحو واضح، يجرجر قدميه في حذاء عريض، وألمح وجهه القبيح فيدو منظره مروّعا، بملامحه المشوهة بحيث كنت على يقين من أنه سوف يلازمني في كوابسي لسنوات لاحقة وأسمع جون فرينش ينادي كليمنت فيرد عليه هذا بتكشيرة بليدة سرعان ما تتحول إلى إيراءة فاضحة، ويفتح فمه، كاشفاً عن أسنانِ قليلة باقية، ونظرته الكسولة ثابتة علينا، تخترق كياننا، تحوم فوقنا، تجاوزنا إلى مكان بعيد. تلك النظرة تنبتني بان كل شيء هادئ في حيان يمكن أن يضطرب فوراً ويزول.
في سنة 1955، بعد تسع سنواتِ تقريباً من تلك المواجهة على شوارع هوموود، أي بعد أن أصبحت في الرابعة عشرة من عمري، وجدت نفسي أنظر إلى صورة فوتوغرافية لوجه ايميت تيل الميت المشوه الملامح وقد اقتحم حياتي بالمباغتة نفسها، كحقيقة ثابتة متصلة تستقر في نفسي شأنها شأن كليمنت إن كنتم لا تتذكرون أقول إنه في سنة 1955، أستقل إيميت تيل، وكان في الرابعة عشرة من عمره مثلي، قطارا من محطة في شيكاغو لزيارة عائلته في مسيسيبي. وبعد أسابيع جلبت جثته في قطار عائد إلى شيكاغو.
إيميت لويس تيل قتل لأنه من الملؤتين، قيل إنه تحرش بسيدة بيضاء بأن صفر لها بصوت يشبه عواء الذئب.
وايدمان حاصل على زمالة ماك آرثر وقد فاز بجائزة فوكنر للرواية مرتين ووصل إلى المرحلة النهائية من جائزة الكتاب الوطني حلقة النقاد وجائزة الكتاب الوطني، يقضي حياته متنقلاً بين نيويورك وفرنسا.
