يتّفق النقاد ومنظّرو الدراسات الثقافية ودارسو تأريخ الافكار أن الرواية أحد أهم الإبتكارات الثقافية التي جاءت بعد عصر التنوير الأوربي، وقد كُتب الكثير بشأن الفنّ الروائي منذ القرن الثامن عشر وحتى يومنا هذا. أودّ في هذا التقديم تثبيت بعض المؤشرات التي علقت في ذهني كملاحظات تراكمت لدي منذ زمن حتى بلغ التراكم حداً رأيت معه أن أعلّق على بعض التفاصيل الخاصة بالرواية في إطارها العام، من وجهة نظر شخصية خالصة، مع التركيز على الرواية المعاصرة بخاصة، وأودّ التأكيد منذ أنني لست بصدد الحديث عن الثيمات الكبيرة الخاصة بوظيفة الفن الروائي وطبيعته وأجناسه - تلك الثيمات التي كتب عنها بشيء من التفصيل في تقديمي لكتابي المترجم (تطور الرواية الحديثة) الصادر عن دار المدى 2016؛ بل سأؤكّد هنا على بعض التفاصيل المُغْفلة التي غالباً ما تُهّمشُ ولا يعنى بها بعضُ قرّاء الرواية وكتّابها
