كان هذا مسافراً جديداً، ركب السفينة من جزيرة كونيفتس دون أن يلحظه أحد منا. وكان حتى ذلك الحين صامتاً، فلم يلتفت اليه أحد، ولكن الجميع حدّقوا به الآن، ومن المحتمل أنهم دهشوا جميعاً لأنه ظل إلى ذلك الحين لا يلفت نظر أحد، كان رجلاً هائل الطول ذا وجه أسمر مفتوح، وشعر كثيف متموج رصاصي اللون لما يخالطه من شيب على نحو غريب. كان يرتدي قمبازاً يشد عليه حزاماً عريضاً من أحزمة الرهبان ويعتمر طربوشاً أسود من الجوخ، وكان من المستحيل أن يحدس أحد هل كان راهباً أم مبتدئاً في الرهبانية، لأن رهبان الجزر في بحيرة لادوجسكويه، لا يلبسون دائماً القلنسوات السود ليس في رحلاتهم فقط، بل وفي داخل الجزر أيضاً، ولبساطتهم الريفية يقتصرون على الطرابيش، وقد تبين فيما بعد أن رفيق سفرنا هذا رجل ممتع للغاية، ومظهره لايمكن أن يعطيه من العمر غير ما يزيد على الخمسين سنة بقليل، ولكنه كان عملاقاً في المعنى الكلي لهذه الكلمة، بل نموذجاً للعملاق الروسي البسيط القلب الطيب النفس الشبيه بالجد إيليا موروميتس المصّور في لوحة فيريتشاغين الرائعة، وفي قصيدة الكونت اليكسي تولستوي.
