لا يمكن الحديث عن مسرح الأديب الروسي إيفان سرجييفيتش تورغينيف دون التعرُّض إلى دراسته الأكاديمية وكتاباته الشعرية والروائية والقصصية. إذ أنهى دراسته الثانوية على أيدي مدرِّسين خصوصيين، والتحق بجامعة موسكو في العام 1833 درس فيها عاماً واحداً بكلية الآداب، ثم انتقل إلى جامعة بطرسبرغ حيث درس اللغات الأجنبية، وأنهى دراسته الجامعية باكتساب حاسة التذوق الأدبي. سافر إلى برلين في العام 1838 لإتمام معارفه بالتاريخ والفلسفة، وتعرَّف على فلسفة هيغل، وعند عودته إلى موسكو تابع دراسته للحصول على ماجستير بالفلسفة، وكان يداوم على حضور الندوات الأدبية ويكتب الشعر. ورغم حصوله على ماجستير في الفلسفة من جامعة بطرسبرغ إلا أنّه لم يسلك الطريق الأكاديمي، فقد غلبت عليه موهبته الأدبية، فاتجه إلى الكتابة، وتعرَّف على الأدباء الروس مثل بيلنسكي، نيكراسوف، ودوستويفسكي. تولَّع إيفان الصغير بحب الأدب والقراءة وتذوق اللغة الروسية عن طريق بونين العامل في منزل العائلة بالقرية. بالإضافة إلى أنّ مكتبة القرية سباسكي كانت زاخرةً بأمهات كتب الأدب الفرنسي والأوروبي. يتميز مسرح تورغينيف بالتصوير الواقعي للحياة اليومية الروسية، والأخلاق وطباع البشر، والحوار الذي ينبض حياةً، وبقدرة الشخصيات المسرحية في التعبير عن أنفسهم بصدق ووضوح.
