في قلبِ مكسيكو سيتي امرأة، عالقة في بيتٍ وفي زواجٍ ليس بمقدورها السَّكن إليه ولا التخلّي عنه، تفكّرُ بماضيها. تقرّرُ كتابة رواية عن أيّامها السّالفة في دار نشرٍ في مدينة نيويورك، وعن الغرباء الذين أصبحوا عشّاقاً، وعن الأشباح والشعراء الذين سَكنوا حيّها. وتكتبُ على وجه الخصوص عن هوسها، في شبابها، بشاعرٍ مكسيكيّ مغمور من عشرينيات القرن العشرين، يُدعى جيلبرتو أوين، وهو شخصية هامشيّة من «عصر نهضة هارلم»، ومتجوّل على أرصفة مترو الأنفاق في مانهاتن، وصديق وخصيم لفيديريكو غارسيا لوركا. أثناء كتابتها يعود جيلبرتو للحياة على الورق: رجل وحيدٌ مجهول يعيش على هامش أوساط الكتابة والشرب في هارلم، إبانَ بدء «الكساد الكبير»، وهو أيضاً مسكونٌ بطيفِ امرأة في معطفٍ أحمر تسافرُ في قطار الأنفاق في نيويورك. كأنّ كلّ قصّة صَدى الأخرى.
من منهما يتخيّلُ الآخر؟ أتراهما شبحين يبحثان عن سبيلٍ للعودة إلى الواقع؟
في مرايا متبادلة مشوّهة، يتشابكُ الواقعيُّ والمتخيّلُ والذكريات، وتقترنُ حياتيهما معاً عبر العقود، مشكّلينَ بذلك مرثيّة منفردة عن الحبّ والخسران.
