إنّ الرواية تسرد وقائع سيرتين متوازيتين يفصل بينهما قرن ونصف من الزمان: واحدة خيالية مبنيّة على شخصية حقيقية، والثانية خيالية بحتة.
- سيرة خوسيه ماريا هيريديا (1803 - 1839)، وهو شخصيّة كوبيّة حقيقية، تاريخية وأدبية، تصرّف المؤلف، كما اعترف هو نفسه في مقدمته، في سرد وقائع حياتها وتكييفها بما يخدم الخطاب الروائي: «مع أنّ هذا النصّ مبنيٌّ على أحداثٍ تاريخيّة يمكن التحقق منها، ومع أنّه مدعومٌ بنصوص مأخوذة من رسائل ووثائق شخصيّة، فإنّ علينا أن ننظر إلى قصّة حياة خوسيه ماريّا هيريديا، مرويّة على لسان بطلها، على أنّها قصّة من نسج الخيال .»
- أمّا شخصيّة فرناندو تيري، فهي، كما قلنا، محض خيال، والرواية تضعها زمنيّاً في سبعينيات القرن الماضي وثمانينياته وتسعينياته.
- ومع أنّ السيرتين مختلفتان كينونة وزماناً ووظيفة (الجامعي فرناندو يدرس الشاعر هيريديا ويبحث عن رواية حياته المفقودة) فقد عقد المؤلفٍ بينهما شبهاً في العديد من ظروفهما: الملاحقة السياسيّة والنفي والصداقات المزروعة بالخيانة والعداوات والحنين إلى الوطن الذي نفيا منه.
الرواية نصّ في الحنين إلى الوطن والشوق إلى العطن، بعدما اضطرتْ كلتا الشخصيتين إلى ترك البلد والتنقّل بين المنافي: فقد اضطرّ خوسيه ماريّا هيريديا إلى الهرب بعد أن تآمر على المحتلّ الإسباني ونادى باستقلال بلده، واضطر فرناندو تيري إلى ترك كوبا بعد أن فُصل من عمله في الجامعة لأنّه «تكلّم» بما لا يعجب «النظام» ولا يرضيه.
وهي لذلك تستعرض الكثير من مشاعر الإنسان المنفي المعذّب الذي يحلم بالعودة إلى وطنه وعناق أهله وأحبته وأصدقائه، وهم أحياناً على مرمى حجر وبصر منه.
وأخيراً فإنّ هذه الرواية توصف بأنّها أكثرُ روايات پادورا طموحاً وتعقيداً وأتقنها بناءً. قال الناقد الكوبي أبيليو استيبيث عنها إنّها: «رواية حياتنا كلّنا. فهي مبنيّة على ألم، علينا أن نتجاوزه، وتقدم لنا عرضاً لما كنّا عليه وما نحن عليه». وتنبأ لها أن تكون «علامة مضيئة في طريق الرواية الكوبية المعاصرة».
