كانت هنالك على الدوام تلك الصرخة التي استطعت أن أسمعها، الصرخة التي بدت لي صادرة عن شخص آخر، الصرخة في وجه شيء ما لم أستطع أن أتذكر وجهه قط، على الرغم من أنني كنت قادراً على الشعور بحضوره الخبيث - صرخة تلو الأخرى في الظلام، في قلب الوحدة المطلقة.

فقد بدا أفضل استعداداً مني لمقاومة الوحدة. كان، في الواقع، أكثر استقلالاً. فعندما كان في الثانية من عمره، أحسّ، ذات يوم، بالضجر من المنزل فخرج منه بكل بساطة.
