بطلة روايتنا ليديدي شابة صغيرة في السادسة عشرة من عمرها، ذكية ومرحة. سميت تيمناً بالأميرة الراحلة ديانا، "قديسة النساء المخدوعات". تقيم مع والدتها في ريف مقاطعة غيريرو في المكسيك. حظها من التعليم قليل؛ لأن المدرسة الصغيرة التي ترتادها تفتح أبوابها بصورة متقطعة، وبوجود مدرس متطوع فقط، لأن الجميع يخاف المجيء إلى هذا المكان المعروف عنه أنه مسرح ناشط لعصابات المخدرات التي دمرت المجتمعات الصغيرة الريفية من المنطقة؛ وخبرتها قليلة في الحياة لذلك فهي تأخذ كل حكمتها من والدتها، ريتا، وهي، بالإضافة إلى المكان، البطلة الحقيقيّة للرواية، لذلك تجد عبارة "قالت أمي" في كل صفحة.
في الرواية تقول ريتا: "كل ما هو ممنوع عليك معرفته أو التحدث عنه يتحوّل في النهاية إلى أغنية". وقد غنت لنا جنيفير كلمنت أغنيتها، فكانت هذه الرواية الساحرة.
