إن الأدب العبري قبل رواية "حنة وميخائيل" بفترة "البالماح" كان يصف فقط البطولات الزائفة، والحلم الوردي المزعوم، ومجتمع اللامشاكل سوى من الأعداء العرب، فإن هذه الرواية لا تتعامل فقط مع الهوّة التي بين الأجيال في المجتمع الإسرائيلي بل تتناول الهوّة في اللغة التي بين الاباء، بإقامة الدولة وفق أفكار ومثاليات وضعوها هم لأنفسهم، والأبناء الذين كان عليهم أن يتركوا هذا العالم المزعوم ويكرّسوا جهودهم لإيجاد حلول لمشاكل حقيقية تواجههم في حياتهم اليومية. أي أن هذه الرواية التي كتبها آموس خور تركز على الثمن الذي يدفعه الجيل اليهودي المولود في إسرائيل عندما تصطدم أحلامهم بالواقع المرير، والرواية تتعامل مع هذا الثمن في إطار عالم صغير من حياة أسرية. وقد كُتبت الرواية قبل حرب 1967 بشهور قليلة، وأبطالها الفاشلون في حياتهم الزوجية هم من جيل الصابرا، الجيل الذي أعدته إسرائيل لكي يستوطن الأرض على حساب سكانها. على المستوى الروائي السردي تحكي هذه الرواية قصة انهيار زواج بين شاب وفتاة عندهما توقعات متضاربة عن حياتهما مع بعضهما البعض. فمن بداية الرواية تتساءل حنه لماذا تزوجت زوجها. محاولاته البائسة ليك يبدو جذاباً وأصيلاً تبدو في نظرها مخزية، وعائلته إستبدادية، ومع استمرار الرواية يزيد هذا التساؤل إلحاحاً في عقل حنه فتعاني من انسلاخ عاطفي يأخذ شكل توق غير محدود إلى الماضي وشعور غامض بأن هناك شيئاً ما ناقصاً مع إيمان بأن حياتهما لا معنى لها، وأنها وقعت في شرك، وأنها تريد فقط أن تنام. إنه من السهل أن نتتبع تخلّي حنه عن الواقع حين تندفع أكثر إلى عالم الأحلام بسبب وتيرية ورتابة زوجها ميخائيل الجامد، ومن هنا جاءت المقارنة بين هذين الزوجين والجيلين اللذين مثّلا الحياة في إسرائيل حتى صدور هذه الرواية.
