تعدُّ رواية الأمة إزاورا من أهمَّ النصوص الأدبية التي أنتجها التيار الرومانسي البرازيلي في القرن التاسع عشر، ورغم أن برناردو غيمارايس (1825- 1884) ألَّف كُتُباً أخرى في مجال الرواية والشعر، فإن هذا العمل أكثرها شعبية لأنه أصبح نصّاً أدبياً كلاسيكياً في الدول الناطقة باللغة البرتغالية، وتحوّل إلى مسلسل تلفازي لقي نجاحاً كبيراً وتابعه المشاهدون في 150 بلداً وبمختلف اللغات.
تحكي الرواية عن منحة الأمّة الخِلاسية إزاورا ومعاناتها مع ليونسيو، سيّدها المُتهتّك والقاسي، وعن الحبّ الجامح الذي يربطها بالشاب ألفارو، ذلك الأرستقراطي المثالي والمناهض للعبودية.
وتمثِّل هذه الأحداث تناقضات المجتمع البرازيلي السياسية والإجتماعية في القرن التاسع عشر، حين كان المثقفون ورجال السياسة منقسمين بين مؤيّد لنظام العبودية، وما ينطوي عليه من مصالح إقتصادية وإجتماعية، ومناهض لهذا النظام لما يضعه من عراقيل وعقبات عرقية وثقافية تَخُول دون تقدُّم البلاد وسعي المجتمع إلى تحقيق الحرية والعدالة.
بَيد أن القيمة الحقيقية لهذا الكتاب لا تكمن فقط في طروحاته الفكرية وما يجري بين شخصياته من صراعات إجتماعية وسياسية، بل تتجلّى أيضاً في خصائصه الفنية وأسلوبه الأدبي المتميّز، لأن برناردو غيمارايس عرفَ كيف يجمع في ثناياه بين الروماسية والواقعية ليتجاوز الكتابة التقريرية والسرد البسيط للأحداث ويقدِّم لوحات تعبيرية وصوراً مستوحاة من الأسطورة والتاريخ والأدب، تختزل ثقافة عصره وتخاطب وجدان القارئ في كل زمان ومكان.
