في هذا العمل لن يجد القارئ قصّة يتابع أحداثها، بل هو أقرب إلى أن يكون كتابًا أراد منه دوستويفسكي أن يعبّر عن أفكار ونظرة إلى الحياة من خلال شخصية سلبيّة لإنسان يمتلئ قلبه بالمرار والاحتقار للناس ولنفسه.
لقد قيل عن هذه الرواية إنها تعبّر عن تيار تشاؤمي عرفه القرن التاسع عشر من أبرز أعلامه نيتشه وكيركجارد وشوبنهاور، فنرى البطل يهاجم نظريات الأخلاق والمنفعة والمصلحة والنظريات الوضعيّة والمادية التي راجت في ذلك الزمان.
لقد كتب دوستويفسكي هذه الرواية على قسمين، القسم الأول منها ليس إلا نوعًا من حديث الانسان مع نفسه، أو هو نوع من الاعتراف، فيقول: أنا رجلٌ مريض.. إنسان خبيث... لست أملك شيئًا مما يجذب ويفتن. وفي هذا القسم يغلب الجانب الفكري الفلسفي. فهو يرفض الوقوف حتى أمام جدار العلم، فيرفض قبول أن 2×2=4، فيقول: فيمَ تعنيني قوانين الطبيعة والرياضيات إذا كانت هذه القوانين لا ترضيني ولا تعجبني؟ إنني أرفض أن أُذلَّ أمام هذا الحاجز.
أما في القسم الثاني، فنراه يدخل إلى عالم الأدب والشعر من خلال تعليقات على بعض الأعمال، وعلى عالم الوقائع من خلال نظرته لمجتمعه، ومن خلال علاقة مع بائعة هوى تظن واهمة أنه سيخلّصها من التردّي الذي ينتظرها.
