وُلد آندي ويير في 16 يونيو عام 1972 لأب فيزيائي (فيزياء الجسيمات على وجه التحديد) وأم حائزة على درجة علمية في هندسة الكهرباء (تطلقا وعمره 8 سنوات).
نشأ ويير على قراءة مؤلفات الخيال العلمي الكلاسيكية لآرثر سي كلارك وإسحاق عظيموف.
بدأ العمل كمبرمج حاسوب لمختبرات Sandia الوطنية، وفي الخامسة عشر من عمره درس علوم الحاسوب في جامعة كاليفورنيا -سان دييغو لكنه لم يتخرج.
وظفته شركات برمجية مثل AOL و Blizzard حيث عمل هناك على لعبة Warcraft 2.
بدأ وير الكتابة في الخيال العلمي في العشرينات من عمره ونشرها من خلال موقعه الإلكتروني لسنوات.
The Egg أول أعماله التي جذب بها انتباه الجمهور وهي عبارة عن قصة قصيرة مكونة من عدة مقاطع فيديو من YouTube عُرضت في شريط واحد.
لفت الأنظار إليه بشدة، بفضل روايته الأولى The Martian (تُرجمت إلى العربية في 2016 تحت عنوان "سجين المريخ")، والتي كتبها بأسلوب علمي رصين لتبدو واقعية بقدر الإمكان.
تضمنت الرواية أبحاث مستفيضة عن ميكانيكا المدارات وتاريخ المركبات الفضائية المأهولة وعلم النبات.
نشر الرواية مجانًا على موقعه بشكل متسلسل وتحت ضغط طلبات القراء قام بتوفير نسخ منها على جهاز كيندل (لوحي أمازون) بسعر 99 سنت فقط، لتتصدر قائمة مبيعات فئة الخيال العلمي.
ابتاعت Crown Publishing Group حقوق النشر وأصدرتها من جديد في 2014.
وصفتها The Wall Street Journal على أنها "رواية الخيال العلمي الأكثر نقاوة منذ سنوات".
وفي 2015، حُولت لفيلم من بطولة مات ديمون وجيسيكا شاستاين.
ويير يعمل على روايته الثانية Zhek، ستكون رواية خيال علمي تقليدية أكثر على حد وصفه.
