التربية لا يمكن شرحها في كلمة موجزة؛ لأن معناها كبير يستوجب الكلام الكثير ولأن الإيجاز في شرح الحقائق العلمية لا يناسب المبتدئ الذي هو أحوج إلى الشرح والإسهاب .. فقد قال أفلاطون"التربية وصول الروح، والجسم إلى كل كمال وجمال ممكن".. وقالت العرب: "التربية هي إبلاغك الشيء درجة كماله تدريجياً بوساطة العناية به والهيمنة عليه"..
أما فريبل فقال عن مدرسته في التربية : "الغرض من التربية هو الحصول على الإنسان الكامل ، وغايتنا هي تخريج أبناء موصوفين بالرقي العقلي والأدبي مستعدين لتضحية النفس والنفيس في سبيل وطنهم العزيز وقت الخطر، وتخريج أناس يعملون لسعادة بلادهم ويرقون في العلوم، والصنائع ويطلبون العلم طوال حياتهم ، يحبون الله ويطيعونه حتى يتيسر لهم الرقي"..وفي رأي سبنسر: "التربية هي إعداد الشخص لأن يعيش عيشة آمنة " .
