تكشف فصول الرواية الكثير عما يدور في كواليس الصحافة المصرية والعربية، وكيفية إدارة المجلات والجرائد، وعن تشابك المصالح بين إدارة التحرير والكتّاب وبقية العاملين بالمطبوعة، وكيفية تربُّح بعض الأفراد من وراء عملهم بالصحافة.
كما تكشف عن الصراع الخفي في إحدى المجلات الثقافية الخليجية، بين رئيس التحرير وإحدى المحررات التي كانت وراء تعيينه رئيسا للتحرير.
كما تغوص الرواية في العالم السياسي والاجتماعي والاقتصادي والثقافي بالمنطقة العربية، بدءاً من انتفاضة 18 و19 يناير 1977 في مصر وصولا إلى ثورة 25 يناير 2011.
ولا تخلو الرواية من الجانب العاطفي حيث علاقة السارد بزميلته الكاتبة والفنانة المصرية منى فارس، والكاتبة الخليجية الجوهرة إبراهيم، وكأن المرأتين شخصيتان لروح واحدة. فضلا عن بروز شخصيات أخرى عربية وهندية بالرواية تكشف عن الواقع الخليجي اليومي الذي يتعامل من خلاله السارد خلال السنوات التي قضاها بالخليج.
"رئيس التحرير" وثيقةٌ أدبية فنية سياسية ورمزية للكثير من الأحداث التي مرّت على المنطقة العربية من خلال استخدام تقنيات الصحافة والإعلام داخل فصولها التي بلغت 27 فصلاً قصيراً ومتوسطَ الطول، حيث نجد التقرير والمقال والحوار الصحفي والاستطلاع والتحقيق وغير ذلك من أشكال الصحافة، إلى جانب التقنيات الروائية من سردٍ ووصفٍ وحوارٍ ومونولوجٍ داخليّ وعودةٍ إلى الوراء (فلاش باك)، بالإضافة إلى وجود قصائد شعرية، فلم ينسَ السارد أنه شاعر في المقام الأول دخلَ عالمَ الصحافة من أوسع أبوابه.
