الأدب هو وجه الثقافة الروسية، تماماً كما هي الفلسفة تُعتبر وجه الثقافة الألمانية، والتصوير الزيتي يُمثِّل إيطاليا، والسينما تُميِّز الثقافة الأميركية. إذا أردتم أن تعرفوا روسيا فما عليكم إلا أن تقرأوا أدبها، أن تقرأوا أدباءها. المصائب والأفراح، القلق والحزن، النهوض والسقوط، العمل والتفكير - كل هذا نجده في الكلمة، أغنى مصدرٍ للحياة الشعبية. يقول مفكِّرُ القرن التاسع عشـر الروسـي نيكولاي ستراخوف: «كلُّ كاتب يعبِّر عن روح الشعب بهذه الدرجة أو تلك، بهذا الشكل أو ذاك؛ هذه هي التربة المشتركة التي ينشأون عليها. في هذه الحالة يقال هذا الشيء، وفي تلك يقال ذاك، لكن الجذر واحد. روح الشعب هو ما نسمِّيه نحن القوة الخفية، التي يعتمد عليها ظهور الروح الإنسانية بكل ما في جذورها من رسوخ.
كان القرن التاسع عشـر هو العصر الذهبي للأدب الروسي. القرن الذي تلاه شهد انتصار الاتحاد السوفيتي السياسـي وصعوده، ثم انهياره المدوي، نهوضه الثوري، وانتصاره في الحرب العالمية الثانية على أوروبا التي وحّدها هتلر، ثم التَّهتك الذي أصاب البلاد سنة 1991. عكَسَ أدب المرحلة السوفيتية قدرةَ وقوةَ الدولة العظمى، التي فتحت الطريق نحو الفضاء. كانت هناك أخطاء، ومصائر تراجيدية دموية أيضا، وقد حُفظت بالذاكرة والكلمة المكتوبة.
وقد كان الاتحاد السوفيتي- فترة الصداقة بين الشعوب، وتربية إنسان المستقبل، الذي كان أهم شيء بالنسبة له: السلامُ على الكوكب، العدلُ والمساواة، والأخوة. في قاعات الجامعات اجتمع طلبة من آسيا وإفريقيا، وأميركا اللاتينية، والشرق الأوسط! كان زمناً سعيداً!.. فتح ذلك الزمن آفاقا للعيش المشترك غير تلك التي نراها اليوم. وقد اكتسبت لغة تشيخوف وتولستوي، وبفضل «الشَّباب السوفيتي»، قرَّاءً وأنصاراً جدداً. تعتبر الثقافة الروسيّة الكلاسيكية ثروةً لا تُقدَّر بثمن، وهي ستكتسب قوةً جاذبةً ما بقي الناس الذين يجذبهم جمال الكلمة يحيون على هذه الأرض.
