يلقي الضوء على "الأوبرا" كفن مسرحي وموسيقي في آن واحد، إذ تقوم الأوبرات في بنائها على عناصر شتى تستمدها من عدة فنون أخرى مختلفة، مثل الشعر والمسرح والموسيقى والرقص والتصوير والرسم الزخرفي، ولكن أبرزها دون شك هي ما تلتئم في فنون المسرح والموسيقى.
وقد ظهرت كتب لا يحصى عددها بشأن الأوبرا، وبمختلف اللغات الحية، حيث كانت عادة تتوافر في معالجتها لهذا الفن على إبراز ناحية واحدة من ناحيتيه الأساسيتين: المسرحية والموسيقى، بل يغلب الظن في أن أغلبها كان يعالج الأوبرا على أنها فن موسيقي فحسب.
والواقع ان الأوبرا لا تستمد حياتها أصلًا إلا من ظهورها على المسرح، كما لا تأسرنا ألحانها المسرحية إلا إذا كانت تستمد طابعها وحيويتها من المسرح أيضًا، بحيث لا يتضح جمالها إلا عندما ينشدها المغنِّي وهو يقوم بأداء التمثيل.
