يتناول هذا الكتاب تاريخ ايران من بعده الجيوسياسي في محاولة لفهم طبيعة السياسات الإيرانية في الزمن المعاصر في منطقة جنوب غرب آسيا، وخصوصاً في منطقة المشرق العربي. ولهذا الغرض فإن الكتاب يتضمن مراجعة تاريخية لإيران منذ زمن الإمبراطورية الأخمينية (550 ق.م. – ٣٣٠ ق.م.) حتى بدايات القرن العشرين في محاولة لفهم الهوية الجيوسياسية لإيران عبر مقارنة أوجه المثابرة والثبات في السياسات التي انتهجتها الإمبراطوريات والدول التي تعاقبت على حكم إيران والتي تشكل العامل المحرك والدافع لفهم السياسات الإيرانية في زمننا الراهن. وهذا يؤسس لفهم السياسات التي تعتمدها إيران في زمننا الراهن في منطقة وسط آسيا والقوقاز، وجنوب آسيا إضافة إلى منطقة المشرق العربي. وبالتالي فإن الكتاب يرسي أسس فهم الخطاب الأيديولوجي الإيراني في ظل الثورة الإسلامية الإيرانية بعد العام ١٩٧٩، وأسباب دعمها للقضية الفلسطينية في مواجهة الاحتلال الصهيوني، وأسباب العداء الأميركي والغربي لإيران، وأسباب التقارب بين إيران والقوتين الأوراسيتين روسيا والصين، وسياسة التحالفات التي عقدتها مع عدد من الأطراف أهمها سورية وحزب الله في لبنان وأنصار الله في اليمن وعدد من فصائل المقاومة الفلسطينية والفصائل العراقية في العراق.
