يُعد هذا الكتاب بمثابة موسوعة متكاملة تستعرض بإسهاب أحدث الدراسات والبحوث في علم الخرائط وملحقاته. هذا كتاب متعدد الأوجه في بابه دون ارتباك وانفصام وغزير المادة في تناوله بغير إفراط ولا تفريط. عنوانه «خرائط العالم»، وموضوعه التخصصي المحوري «تصميم ورسم الخرائط» لكنه ينفتح بتوالي فصوله التسعة عشر على مجالات معرفية وعلمية وتاريخية وثقافية وجيو -سياسية وتكنولوجية ما كانت لتخطر ببال غير المتخصصين لولا دراسة ماراثونية من هذا النوع. يُقدم الفصل الأول من الكتاب عرضاً افتتاحياً يتناول بعض المبادئ الأساسية في فن رسم الخرائط ويشير إلى بعض أنماط الخرائط كما يستعرض بإيجاز تطور وظيفة الخريطة عبر القرون السابقة مع التأكيد أن خريطة اليوم الإليكترونية وإن اختلفت اختلافاً بيناً عن خريطة الأمس البعيد والقريب الورقية فإن الأخيرة تمثل تراثاً مهماً لا يمكن إغفاله في حساب التطور ومعادلة الارتقاء. ومن ناحية أخرى يتناول الفصل الثاني استعمالات الخرائط حيث تتجلى أمام أعين القراء قيمة الخرائط كصور ووثائق يُستفاد بها في تحقيق جملة واسعة من الأغراض سواء على صعيد السياسة أو الاقتصاد أو الرياضة أو التعليم أو الحرب أو السياحة ونقل المعلومات وما عدا ذلك من تطبيقات علمية وتكنولوجية.
