د.ماري ميدجلي، (١٩١٩-٢٠١٨) فيلسوفة بريطانية ومحاضرة أولى في الفلسفة بجامعة نيوكاسل، كانت معروفة بمؤلفاتها عن العلوم التجريبية والاخلاقيات والفلسفة ، وعرفت بفيلسوفة الأخلاق، وألفت أكثر من خمسة عشر كتابًا.
حصلت د. ميدجلي على الدكتوراه من جامعتي دورهام نيو كاسل بالمملكة المتحدة، وقدمت نظريات هامة عن الأخلاق والتطور، وظلت كتاباتها ومحاضراتها من أهم المراجع في مجالات فلسفية مختلفة.
كما عُرفت د. ميدجلي بنقدها للاختزالية والعلموية، وقد وصفتها جريدة الجارديان البريطانية بأنها الفيلسوفة المتصدية الأولى للادعاءات العلمية المغلوطة.
وفي هذا الكتاب تعمل د. ميدجلي على كشف لامنطقية وفقر المعتقدات التي تتوارى خلف هيبة العلوم التجريبية، وتتوجه بانتقادات حادة لإساءة استخدام هذه العلوم، كما تبحث في ظاهرة تحول هذه العلوم عند البعض إلى بدائل للأديان مشيرة إلى مدى التشوّه الذي يصيبها نتيجةً ذلك
