تحكي الرواية قصة نزوح أسرة مصرية من الريف إلى المدينة في عام 1945 حيث تستعرض الأحداث التي مرت بها الأسرةمن خلال عيني بطلة الرواية "سمرا" الابنة الصغرى لأسرة السيد عبد الجليل.
على صعيدٍ عام تستعرض الرواية من خلال الأحداث، طباع الأسرة المصرية في هذا الزمن و طريقة حياتهم، إلى جانب التطور المعماري و المناطق السكنية القديمة والمستحدثة في هذه الحقبة الزمنية، على الجانب الشخصي نتعرف على الأحداث المتتالية التي قد تصل حد الأهوال والتي تعرضت لها البطلة الريفية التي وصلت للقاهرة، طفلة في الثامنة من عمرها، و أثناء نشأتها، و في فترة المراهقة، حتى صارت عروسًا .
تتسم نهاية الرواية بطرح عده تساؤلات ، حيث تهييء القاريء للجزء الثاني الذي يبدأ مع بطلتنا عام 1970 و ينتهي عام 2019 .
