هذه محاولة لتقديم آراء أهم فرق المسلمين في نسق متكامل، والفرق التي كانت وما زالت تعبر عن مختلف اتجاهات المسلمين هي المعتزلة والأشاعرة، والظاهرية والماتريدية وأهل السلف، ثم الشيعة والخوارج.
ولا تعبر هذه الفرق عن اتجاهات المسلمين إزاء حقيقة الدين فحسب، وإنما لكل منها آراء متكاملة في موضوعات علم الكلام من إلهيات وطبيعيات وإنسانيات تندرج تحتها الأخلاق والسياسة، وليس الأمر كذلك بالنسبة لسائر الفرق التي أهملت شأنها كالمجسمة والمشبهة والمرجئة والسبئية والميمية إلى غير ذلك من أسماء ربما كان بعضها على غير مسميات، وربما أشار البعض الآخر إلى غلاة، وفي الغلو تطرف، ولا يكون التطرف إلا في أطراف تيار الفكر وهامشه، ومن ثم لا يجدر أن نعرض عما هو جوهري إلى ما هو طفيلي.
