إن الأساطير التي وصلتنا عن بوذا لا تبدأ منذ ولادته، وإنما تتعرض له قبل أن يولد، وتستعرض شتى مراحل حياته ومماته وبعد مماته، فتاه الباحثون فيها، ووجدوا صعوبة كبرى في تعرف حياة بوذا الصادقة الحقيقية مما أدى إلى إنكار وجوده كفرد حقيقي.
