نبذة
أحداث هذه القصة لا تعدو أن «سالافان» يُفصَل من عمله التافه إثر حادثة يحسبها الناس حمقًا وشذوذًا ويراها هو عملًا ضروريًّا يرد إليه ثقته بأنه إنسان يعيش بين أناسي. وليس بعد ذلك إلا البطالة والتشرد والفاقة، وأحلام الحرمان، وأوهام القلب الوحيد.
في «اعتراف منتصف الليل»، حلل «دوهاميل» عناصر التناقض بين الفرد ومجتمعه، وبين واقع الفرد وآماله، وبين أفكاره وأعماله. صور ذلك كله منعكسًا على ذهن «سالافان»، فهو لا يقص أحداثًا، بل أفكارًا بلغت من قوتها وتمكنها مبلغ الأحداث، فهي أحداث بالنسبة لصاحبها، وهي مغامرات حقة تمسك أنفاسك وأنت تقرأها.
شخصية «سالافان»... لا تقل حياة ولا صدقًا ولا عمقًا عن شخصية «هاملت» أو «دون كيخوتي».
صُنفت «اعتراف منتصف الليل» بين العناوين الاثني عشر لقائمة «الجائزة الكبرى لأفضل روايات النصف الأول من القرن العشرين».

عن المؤلف
«جورج دوهاميل» (1884-1966) طبيب وأديب فرنسي وعضو في الأكاديمية الفرنسية. ترك ممارسة الطب مع نهاية الحرب العالمية الأولى وتفرغ للأدب. نشر أكثر من مئة عنوان، بين روايات ومجموعات قصصية وكتب الأسفار والمقالات، بالإضافة إلى ثماني دواوين شعرية وسبع مسرحيات، وأعمال نقدية عديدة ومذكرات. ولا شك أن أهم أعماله وأشهرها تبقى المجموعتان الروائيتان: «حياة سالافان ومغامراته» (خمس روايات نُشرت بين 1920 و1932، وروايتنا هذه هي الأولى بينها)، و«قصة آل باسكييه» (عشرة روايات نُشرت بين 1933 و1945).
