البخلاء كتاب في نوادر البخلاء وإحتجاج الأشحاء وأخبار المقتصدين من أهل البصرة وبغداد وخرسان ممن إحتك بهم الجاحظ، أو قرأ لهم، أو وقف على أخبارهم، وهو، إذ يسعى إلى تصوير أخلاقهم، وعرض أحوالهم وطرقهم في الحرص، يبغي، في الآن نفسه إلى " تبين حجة طريفة، أو تعرف حيلة لطيفة، أو إستفادة نادرة عجيبة ". يستهل الجاحظ كتابه بمقدمة يتناول فيها نفسية البخيل، وكيف يشعر بالآفاة ويعجز عن تقديمها، فينتحل لنفسه الأعذار. ثم يثبت الجاحظ رسالة لسهل بن هارون يرد فيها على بني عمه الذي إتهموه بالبخل. ينتقل بعد ذلك إلى سرد نوادر البخلاء، مبتدئاً بأهل خرسان ومرو حيث البخل طبع فيهم وفي طبيعة أرضهم وحيواتهم، ثم نوادر أهل البصرة من المسجديين، ويسرد بعدها قصص من ذاع صيتهم في البخل أمثال زبيدة إبن حميد الصوفي، وخالد بن يزيد، والحارثي، وغيرهم. ويورد رسائل يذم فيها البخل ويمدح الجود، أو العكس، دون أن ينسى ويفرد قسماً خاصاً لأطعمة العرب في منافعها ومضارها، ومتحدثاً عن النيران ودورها في هداية الضالين، مستشهداً، في كل ذلك بالأحاديث والآثار والشعر، مما يدل على ما كان للجاحظ من باع طويل في الثقافة والإستيعاب. هذه الطبعة لطلاب المرحلة الثانوية، فقد حرص على: التشكيل الضروري الذي يزيل الإبهام والغموض. حذف الألفاظ النابية والفاحشة التي كانت، بالنسبة للجاحظ أمراً طبيعياً في عصره. حذف الأوصاف التي يمجّها الذوق والتي تثير في النفس شيئاً من القرف والإشمئزاز.
