يعتبر هذا الكتاب من أهم الكتب، التي تعرضت لمناقشة المسائل الفلسفية الهامة في المحيط الإسلامي بعد المؤلفات التي جاد بها كل من الفارابي وابن سينا، وذلك بعد أن ترجمت الكتب اليونانية وغيرها، وبعد أن اختلط المسلمون بغيرهم من الأجناس وأصحاب المذاهب الأخرى.
كما يمتاز المؤلف هذا الكتاب بالتدقيق، مما يجعل هذا الكتاب نموذجاً للفكر الفلسفي المرموق لفظاً ومعنىً، وتحرى الضبط وسلامة العبارة، ووضوحها وحسن التقسيم وتسلسل البرهان.
أما دورنا هنا، فيتضح في هذه الدراسة بالتنقيب حول تاريخ ابن كمونة فيما يتعلق بتاريخ ميلاده ووفاته، والبيئة التي نشأ بها، وصلاته ببعض الأمراء، وأهم صفاته، على الرغم من ندرة المصادر في هذا المجال ندرة شديدة، تحد بلا شك من حرية الباحث وتغل يده.
وتحدثنا عن هذا الفيلسوف مؤلفاً، فذكرنا ما نسبت إليه بعض المصادر والشروح من مؤلفات، سوى هذا الكتاب، والجديد في الحكمة، وأوضحنا مدى الإطلاع الغزير الذي اتسم به الرجل.
وتشير الدراسة إلى الهدف من تأليف كتاب "الجديد في الحكمة"، وهو أن الإيمان بالله تعلى واليوم الآخر، وعمل الصالحات، هو غاية الكمال الإنساني وبه فوز المرء بالسعادة الأبدية، ولا يتم تحصيل هذا الإيمان والعمل الصالح، إلا بعلم الحكمة، الذي حاول هذا الكتاب، الحديث عن أصوله وقواعده.
