من خلال شعر المثقب يتجلى من صفات هذا الشاعر سمات كثيرة: أولها سمة الحكيم الزاهد القدري ، ثم سمة السياسي الماهر الذي يقيم صلاته بالحاكمين على أساس من الدهاء المغلف بالتكريم، على غير السياسة التى انتهجها معاصره المتلمس الضبعى الثائر العنيف في ثورته ولعل بعد المثقب عن مقر الحكم في الحيرة كان سببا من أسباب هذا الهدوء في شعره الذي يكاد ان يقرب من المسالمة، لاسيما وان خبر طغيان عمرو بن هند وفتكه بعدد من الشعراء المعاصرين الذين أطلقوا ألسنتهم فيه أو دأبوا على التحريض عليه قد وصل إلى سمعه ، فمصرع طرفة بن العبد كان في البحرين حين ذهب بالرسالة إليه ، ونجا المتلمس حيث فر إلى الشام.
كذلك تبدو منه أيضا سمة الشاعر الإنسان الذي يريد السلام لقومه بالوسيلة التى يراها هو ، وذلك أستابة لسجيته.
وقد جرت قصائده السبعة التى بقيت لنا في أربعة بحور .. ثلاث منها من الطويل ، و اثنتان من الرمل وواحدة من الوافر واخرى من السريع المحقق حسن كامل الصيرفي
