طفيل الغنوي واحد من الشعراء والفرسان الذين اقترن اسمهم بالخيل، فسمي طفيل الخيل لكثرة عنايته واهتمامه بها، ويعد شعر طفيل معجماً للخيل وصفاتها، ولهذا اتكأ اللغويون عليه في المعاجم والكتب. وقد قام حسان فلاح أوغلي في هذا الكتاب بإخراج ديوان هذا الشاعر مجدداً لأن سنوات طويلة مرت على صدور طبعتيه، وقد ظهر في تلك السنوات عدد كبير من كتب التراث واللغة مما أغنى ديوان طفيل بأبيات لم ترد في الديوان المروي، وأضاف روايات جديدة لأبيات كثيرة من الديوان المطبوع وأعطى مادة لغوية إضافة إلى شرح السجستاني. وقد قسم المحقق الديوان إلى ثلاثة أقسام. الأول لديوان طفيل الذي صنعه الأصمعي، والثاني لما روي لطفيل وليس في ديوانه، والثالث لما روي له ولغيره من الشعراء إلى جانب تخريجات كثيرة للديوان كله مع وضع الفهارس المتنوعة لفهرس القوافي والأعلام والأماكن والقبائل والشواهد وصفات الخيل وغيرها.
