"أناظر الوصل أن غاد فمصروم، أم كل دينك من دهماء مغروم، أم ما تذكر من دهماء إذ طلعت، نجدي مريع وقد شاب المقاديم، هل عاشق نال من دهماء حاجته، في الجاهلية قبل الدين مرحوم، بيض الأنوق برعم دون مسكنها، وبالأبارق من طلحام مركوم، وطفلة غير جباء ولا نصف، من سر أمثالها باد ومكتوم، خود تلبس ألباب الرجال بها، معطى قليلاً على بخل ومحروم، عانقتها فانثنت طوع العناق كما، مالت بشاربها صهباء خرطوم، صرف ترقرق في الناجود ناطلها، بالفلفل الجون والرمان مختوم، يمجها أكلاف الإسكاب وافقه، أيدي الهبانيق بالمثناة معكوم، كأمها مارن العرنين مفتصل، من الظباء عليه الودع منظوم، مقلد قضب الريحان ذو جدد، في جوزه من تجار الأدم توسيم، مما تبنى عذارى الحي آنسه، مسح الأكف وإلباس وتنويم".
هذا غيض م ن فيض ما يمه هذا الديوان من قصائد دونها الشاعر المخضرم تميم بن مقبل، وهو شاعر جاهلي، أدرك الإسلام، وأسلم، فكل يبكي أهل الجاهلية، عاش نيفاً ومئة سنة، وعدّ من المخضرمين وكان يهاجي النجاشي الشاعر. والكتاب الذي بين يدينا يضم مختلف القصائد التي نظمها "ابن مقبل" كرتبة على حروف الهجاء العربية، مضبوطة الشكل، ومذيلة بشرح لطيف هدفه توضيح المفردات المشكلة المعنى.
