تحمل كاثرين، الفتاة اليتيمة، وصمة خلفيتها الاجتماعية لكونها من عرقين مختلطين، وذلك في عهد كان فيه المجتمع يقف ضدها ويعادي كلّ ما تمثله من مبادئ. في خضم صراعها اليومي، تُتيح لها الموسيقى حرية الهروب مؤقتاً، وإمكانية الحلم بحياة أفضل. ضمن مسيرة تلفّها تقلّبات الأمومة غير المتوقعة والزوج الغائب، تسعى كاثرين لحماية ملاذها هذا بشقّ الأنفس، والاعتماد على موهبتها لبناء مستقبل لأسرتها.
مهسا أيضاً فتاة يتيمة، تنشأ في جو من الضياع بعد وفاة والديها وإرسالها للعيش مع أقاربها في باكستان. وكجزء من كفاحها للوصول إلى حرّيتها، تهرب مهسا إلى مونتريال، مخلّفة وراءها حبها الأول. ولكنها تكتشف في نهاية المطاف استحالة بتر خيوط ماضيها، لتجد نفسها أخيراً وقد أُجبرت على القبول بزواج مدبّر. بالنسبة لمهسا، تُصبح الموسيقى عزاءها الجميل، حيث تسمح لها بالهروب من الظروف القمعية التي تحيط بها.
في ظل صراعهما بين الحياة المرئية والحياة الخفية، تلتقي الفتاتان عاشقتا الموسيقى..
