إذا كنت قلقًا بشأن المستقبل وتشعر كذلك بالقلق حيال وضعك، فإنني أتفهم شعورك؛ لقد فقدت وظيفتي في عام 2001 أثناء أزمة فقاعة الإنترنت, حيث كانت الشركة تخسر المال بشكل أسرع مما كان بإمكاننا تعويضه، وفي النهاية غرقت الشركة أسرع من سفينة تيتانيك. اعتقدت أن هذا كان أسوأ حدث في حياتي، وكنت على بعد شهرين من الإفلاس ولديَّ زوجة وطفلان صغيران، ورهن عقاري، وليس لديَّ تأمين صحي، ولا أملك سوى مدخرات قليلة للغاية. كانت خسارة مرتب شهر واحد تعني خسارة كل شيء. بدا الوضع سيئًا؛ وأثقلني بمشاعر أسوأ. وبالنظر للأمر من منظور واحد أعتقد أنه كان سيئًا بالفعل، لكن ذات يوم قررت أنني لن أترك هذا التحدي يحبطني, وذلك عندما علمت أنه يجب عليَّ تغيير ما كنت أفكر فيه وما أفعله.
قرأت بعض الكتب، ما مكَّنني من التحكم في مستقبلي المالي وساعدني على اتخاذ بعض القرارات المهمة خلال عملية التغيير. في النهاية، أدت هذه القرارات إلى العمل الذي أقوم به الآن وهو كاتب ومستشار ومتحدث. واعتدت أن أمزح وأقول إنني فُصلت من عملي لأنطلق, وبالفعل أدى تسريحي من عملي إلى امتلاكي مهمة وهدفًا لحياتي, وما تصورت أنه أسوأ حدث في حياتي أدى في الواقع إلى أفضل أحداثها على الإطلاق. وأدركت أن التعامل مع موجات التغيير يتعلق بكيفية إدراكنا للتغيير الذي نواجهه واستجابتنا له.
فلنعد سريعًا إلى الوقت الحالي, حيث أقوم الآن بالكثير من العمل مع القادة والمؤسسات لإحداث تغيير إيجابي. وفي ظل تأثر الكثير من الأشخاص والمؤسسات بالاقتصاد الحالي، خطر لي أننا بحاجة إلى نموذج جديد للتعامل مع موجات التغيير الجديدة في عملنا وفي حياتنا. ففي النهاية، في عالم اليوم لم يتم تحريك قطعة الجبن فحسب, بل جرفها تسونامي ناشئ عن أزمة اقتصادية. نتيجة لذلك، شعرت بأنه لزامًا عليَّ تأليف هذا الكتاب.
