كان غروسبيير يحرس بوابته بكل دقَّة وعناية، وكان يتوقع أن يمر ذو «الزهرة الحمراء» به ويحسب له حسابًا، ولكن لن يمر هذا الإبليس في بوابتي. وكانت عربات النقل تمر في بوابته وكان على بعضها أقفاص، ويسوقها شيخ عجوز، وكان غروسبيير الجاهل الغبي سكرانًا قليلًا، ففتَّش معظم الأقفاص فلم يجد شيئًا، فترك العربات تمر. وبعد نصف ساعة جاءه ضابط يقود 12 جنديًّا وهم يلهثون من الركض وسأله: «هل مرتْ من هنا مركبة نقل؟»، فأجاب غروسبيير: «مرَّتْ مركبات كثيرة منذ نصف ساعة»، فسأله: «هل أذِنتَ لها كلها أن تمر؟»، فقال: «نعم»، فقال له: «إذًا ستُقاد إلى المقصلة يا حضرة الضابط غروسبيير لأن بينها مركبة تحمل الدوق شالي وعائلته، وسائقها ذو «الزهرة الحمراء».
