علم النفس هو علم دراسة العقل, لكن هذه الصياغة البسيطة تغطي مجالًا محيرًا وهائلًا يتعلق بالتفكير والسلوك البشري, بداية من بيولوجيا المخ والجهاز العصبي حتى معنى الحب والسعادة. وقد كان علم النفس يسمى بـ "علم البشر"؛ لأنه يحاول إجراء دراسة علمية على الأشياء التي تجعلنا بشرًا. والكلمة الرئيسية هنا هي كلمة "علم"؛ فهناك العديد من فروع المعرفة الأخرى – كالفلسفة, والتاريخ, والدراسات الثقافية – التي تستكشف مجالات مشابهة أو متداخلة, لكن علم النفس مختلف لأنه يحاول تناولها بأسلوب علمي.
والعلم وفق هذا المعنى يشير إلى فلسفة ومنهجية محددتين في المعرفة والاستكشاف. ويشتمل على استخدام ملاحظات الظواهر (كالأفكار والسلوكيات) لصياغة الفرضيات, وهي نماذج أو نظريات عن كيفية حدوث شيء ما وسبب حدوثه. وهذه الفرضيات تولد توقعات يمكن اختبارها بالتجارب, ودرجة تطابق نتائج التجارب مع هذه التوقعات تؤكد أو تبطل الفرضيات. هذه على الأقل كيفية عمل العلم, ومن ثم كيفية عمل علم النفس, لكن كما ستعلم لا يكون علم النفس بسيطًا وواضحًا للغاية دائمًا.
