بيد أن الأمر لا يقتصر على ما يقوله الشخص؛ فما لا يقوله الشخص بلسانه، ويعبر عنه بأشكال التواصل غير اللفظي المختلفة، يمكن أن يخبرك بالكثير. يمكن للرسائل غير اللفظية أن تؤكد وتدعم ما تقوله، ويمكن أيضًا أن تتعارض مع ما تقوله. يوضح لك الفصل 5 كيف يمكنك أن تزيد فهمك لخلفية مَن تتحدث معه، وكيف يمكنك قراءة ما بين السطور. ستتعلم أنه لا يمكنك الاعتماد على إيماءة واحدة أو تعبير وجه واحد... الخ، لتأكيد ما يعنيه شخص أو ما لا يعنيه، ما يشعر أو ما لا يشعر به. ستحتاج إلى تعلم كيف تقرأ مجموعات معينة من الإشارات غير اللفظية.
يتألف هذا الكتاب من جزأين. يعني الجزء الأول بمبادئ التواصل الفعال، ويصف ما يعوق هذا التواصل الفعال، ويشرح كيف يمكنك تحقيقه. عند التحدث إلى الطرف الآخر يمكنك فعل هذا بطريقة تسهِّل عليه الاستماع إليك، وفهم ما تقصده. كما يعلمك الجزء الأول طرقًا تفهم بها ما يقوله الآخرون على نحو أفضل.
