بطل الرواية موظف في مدينة بطرسبورغ، واسمه بتروفيتش غوليادكين، يواجه مشاكل نفسية، فيستشير طبيبا نفسيا، يخاف الطبيب على أن يجن، ويخبره أن نفوره من حياته الاجتماعية هو تصرف خطير جدا، ويقترح عليه أن يمضي مزيدا من الوقت مع رفقائه، ويعقد العزم على أن يذهب إلى حفلة عيد ميلاد ابنة مدير مكتبه، وبعد سلسلة من المواقف الاجتماعية الفاشلة يخرج غوليادكين من الحفلة ويعود أدراجه إلى بيته، وفي الطريق وخلال عاصفة ثلجية يلتقي بقرينه أول مرة، فتنقلب حياته رأسا على عقب، ... وتدور الأحداث في تصوير للصراع الداخلي الذي يعتمل في نفسه ولعل أهم ما أثر فيه وأثار دهشته أن الناس من حوله وعلى رأسهم رئيسه في العمل وخادمه بتروشكا لم يبد عليهم العجب من ظهور القرين، ونظروا إليه على أنه مجرد رجل يشبهه، فعاملوه على هذا الأساس ..... وقد وصف فلاديمير نابوكوف أسلوب (فيودور دستويفسكي) بالرواية وقال هي أعظم كتاب كتبه دوستويفسكي.
